The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award Winners from 1991 to Present

Football is a sport of legends, and each year the world comes together to recognize the greatest individual performer through FIFA’s flagship award. Today known as The Best FIFA Men’s Player, this award has undergone several evolutions since its inception but remains one of the highest honors a footballer can receive.

Origins of the Award

The award was officially launched in 1991 as the FIFA World Player of the Year, created to rival France Football’s prestigious Ballon d’Or. Unlike the Ballon d’Or — which was initially restricted to European players — FIFA’s award opened recognition to footballers worldwide. Voting was carried out by national team coaches and captains, as well as selected journalists.

Between 2010 and 2015, FIFA merged its award with the Ballon d’Or to create the FIFA Ballon d’Or, a joint honor. However, due to disagreements between FIFA and France Football, the partnership ended in 2016. From then on, FIFA relaunched the award under a new brand: The Best FIFA Men’s Player.
